19TH-CENTURY ROMANTIC CHILDREN’S BOOKS IN HARDBACK 155 volumes in in-12 and in-8 formats, in publisher’s decorated hardback, 130 of which feature a colour lithograph on the front cover. A REMARKABLE COLLECTION, particularly in such fine condition as this, assembled by a discerning collector over several decades. The production of these premium-quality books from 1850 to 1890, closely linked to that of devotional books, was a sort of provincial speciality. They were all published by the publishing houses Mégard in Rouen, Mame in Tours, Ardant or Barbou in Limoges, Lefort in Lille, and Guyot in Lyon. They contain texts by the most prolific authors of the period and, in almost every case, feature beautiful engravings to illustrate them. These publisher’s bindings, modelled on the exquisite bindings of pre-Revolutionary almanacs and poetry collections, are richly decorated. Shades of gold, green, white, blue and red blend beautifully on the covers, which are often adorned with delicate chromolithographic medallions.
