(Music) - CHARPENTIER (Marc-Antoine) - CORNEILLE (P.). MEDEE. A tragedy set to music by Monsieur Charpentier. Paris, Christophe Ballard, 1694. In folio, [4]-64-350 pages, brown calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, gilt inscription on the front cover ‘De Corberon’ (contemporary binding). Undoubtedly the rarest and finest opera by Charpentier (1634–1704), and also the most controversial with the public at the time. FIRST EDITION with the handwritten note on the title page: ‘First performed in 1694, libretto by Thomas Corneille, music by Charpentier’. A fine edition by Christophe Ballard, the King’s sole printer for music. A small tear on one leaf, two split binding teeth Provenance: De Corberon, with his handwritten signature on the title page.
