Description
CHATEAUBRIAND (François-René de). COMPLETE WORKS. Paris, Ladvocat, 1826–1831. 28 tomes in 31 volumes. – ESSAY ON ENGLISH LITERATURE. Paris, Charles Gosselin and Furne, 1836. 2 vols. – PARADISE LOST. Ibid., 1836. 2 vols. – THE CONGRESS OF VERONA. Paris, Delloye, 1838. 2 vols. Set of 37 in-8 volumes, half cherry calfskin, spine decorated with gilt and embossed motifs, marbled edges (contemporary binding). ‘First collected edition, by far the most significant and sought-after’ (Clouzot, p. 67). The author revised and reworked a large part of his works, whilst also publishing a great many previously unpublished pieces: *Les Natchez*, the final instalment of *Abencérage*, *Voyage en Amérique*, … Each volume of the edition is illustrated with a recurring frontispiece, wood-engraved by Thompson, and the final volume provides an analytical table of the writer’s works. Two fold-out plates in the second volume. Spines uniformly faded; some foxing, at times pronounced, due to the quality of the paper; otherwise a fine copy preserved in high-quality, strictly contemporary bindings. Provenance: Montbrian Library label.
