(Dauphiné – Alps) (Manuscript). MAGNARD (Henry). Henry Magnard, writer, archaeologist and traveller, was born in Saint-Sorlin (Drôme), near Moras, in 1774 and died in the same town in 1844. An army auxiliary until 1802, he returned to his hometown, he devoted himself, until his death, solely to archaeology, undertaking a journey almost every year to Italy, the Alps or Switzerland, where he met Saussure and Coindat, returning each time with medals, antiquities, various observations and, above all, vivid notes. These manuscripts, which have never before been published, are largely very legible: they offer a considerable amount of demographic and geographical information, which is particularly detailed, not to mention the vicissitudes of the journey, anecdotes involving the locals and the trials and tribulations of the days spent travelling, accompanied by numerous sketches, drawings and maps. This substantial collection comprises 20 in-4° folders: (journeys, notes, miscellaneous records and travel diaries) containing over 1,200 HANDWRITTEN PAGES in in-8 or in-12 format, and a final folder containing correspondence addressed to him.
