LE BAS (M). SCENES FROM SACRED AND SECULAR WORLD HISTORY, based on the works of the greatest painters… dedicated to His Grace the Duke of Burgundy. Paris, Le Bas, 1771. 2 volumes in-8, calfskin, spines decorated with flowers, double gilt line on the covers (modern binding). A rather unusual work comprising 2 engraved title pages, a frontispiece by Martiny engraved by Le Bas (erroneously placed in the 2nd volume), and 223 HALF-PAGE ILLUSTRATIONS engraved by Duclos, Gaucher, Godefroy, Le Maire, Martiny and Simonet. Water stains on the margins of the first leaves of Volume II. Provenance: Francisque Renard, with his bookplate (no. 473 in the second catalogue of his 1927 sale).
