MONTAIGNE (Michel de). THE ESSAYS. A new edition, thoroughly corrected to remove the errors of previous editions, based on the true original. Paris, Jacques and Emmanuel Langlois, 1657. Folio, [32]–834 (numbered 840)–[42] pages, fawn sheepskin, decorated ribbed spine, gilt interior edging (modern binding). Engraved title page with a portrait of Montaigne in the centre. A new edition based on that published in 1635 by Montaigne’s niece, Mademoiselle de Gournay, with the names of the authors added in the margins, together with the author’s biography, two tables of contents and the French translation of the Italian passages. A good copy despite some minor marginal discolouration on the first 12 leaves and slight wear to the covers. (Tchemerzine IV, 903). Ex-libris F. Fels.
