MORONI (Lino). [DESCRIPTION OF THE SACRED MOUNT OF VERNIA]. (Florence?), undated (1612? – 1620?) In folio, 19th-century half-sheepskin and cardboard binding, with a red label. This rare book is ONE OF THE MOST ASTONISHING ITALIAN BAROQUE ILLUSTRATED BOOKS. Through magnificent plates, it depicts Saint Francis of Assisi’s retreat into solitude in the heart of the Italian Apennines, where he received the stigmata in September 1224. This album is composed as follows: (Illustrated front pages and blank reverse pages) Engraved portrait (by J. Ligozzi, engraved by D. Falcini) 3 plates for A (small central hole). 1 plate for B (small central hole). 1 plate (e, with 3 cut-out inserts). 1 sheet for C 2 sheets for D 17 sheets for E-F-G-H-I-K-L-M-N-O-P-Q-R-S-T-V-Y (tear with no missing parts) 1 leaf (letter from the author), 2 descriptive leaves (one repaired without any loss), 1 leaf (letter from Perucci dated 15 August 1634 (extensive restoration in the margin). Comprising one portrait, 25 plates engraved on the front, the reverse blank, and 4 leaves. One leaf of supplementary plates appears to be missing.
