Description
REDOUTÉ (Pierre-Joseph). THE ROSES. Pirolle. Paris, Dufart; St Petersburg, Hauër et Cie, 1835. In-8 (16 x 24 cm) navy blue percaline, covers embossed with blind-stamped designs, plain spine (contemporary binding). Volume 2 alone features 69 MAGNIFICENT colour plates as inserts. Third edition, published under the direction of Mr Pirolle. Painter to Marie-Antoinette and Empress Joséphine, Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759–1824) combined his perfect knowledge of horticulture with his talent as a painter. Preferring watercolour to gouache, he had to defend in court the colour engraving process he had developed in order ‘to better capture all the softness and brilliance of watercolour’. This process, used in this volume, was finished with a brush by his pupils on each engraving. Scattered foxing.
