LE ROUX (P. J.): A comic, satirical, critical, burlesque, free and proverbial dictionary … by Philibert-Joseph Le Roux, Amsterdam, Zacharie Chastelain, 1750, 2 volumes in-8, black and red title label with vignette, full calfskin, ribbed spine, brown title label and red volume number, covers stamped in gold with the name ‘Le chevalier de la Cressonnière’, red edges, 285 pp. and 336 pp. + notes and index, handwritten and bound following the two volumes. Handwritten ex libris: ‘I belong to the Chevalier de la Cressonnière, an officer in the Vielle Maxime regiment. Dated at Calais, 11 June 1754. ’ An interesting work containing a very large number of expressions from the vernacular, as well as expressive and pleasing words that one might miss from the old, proverbial spoken language… This dictionary is believed to be the only one from the 18th century to contain vulgar and slang terms.
