France, 19th century Bishop’s crozier, the centre decorated with a Nativity scene on one side and an Adoration of the Magi on the other, carved from African elephant ivory Height: 52 cm Weight: 2,138 g the cross-shaft is carved with small flowers and lozenges, surmounted by a frieze of acanthus leaves; at its base is a trefoil arcade featuring a Crucifixion flanked by the Virgin and Saint John and a Virgin and Child between two angels; the scroll is decorated in the centre with a scene of the Adoration of the Magi on one side, and the Nativity on the other; the knot is carved with a scene of Saint George slaying the Dragon Gross weight: 2,138 g *Pre-Convention ivory specimen (I/A), dating from before 1 July 1947 and therefore compliant with Regulation (EC) No 338/97 of 9 December 1996, Article 2-Wmc, and predating 1 July 1975 and therefore compliant with the French decrees of 4 May 2017 and January 2022.
