LA FONTAINE (Jean de). LES AMOURS DE PSYCHE ET DE CUPIDON, followed by Adonis. Paris, Théophile Belin, 1899. 2 volumes in-4°, bradel pink contemporary boards, untrimmed, modern slipcase. "Beautiful edition decorated with 26 hors-texte figures (including 2 titles) printed in colour after watercolours by Borel, executed in the 18th century for the collector Morel de Vindé. The planned edition was not published because of the French Revolution, and the watercolours, acquired by Théophile Belin in 1898, were not engraved by Vigna-Vigneron until more than a century after they had been done. (Rochambeau, p. 603, no. 46). Each print is accompanied in this edition by two additional states, in pure etching and in bistre. The volumes also include 2 decompositions of the colours of a print, in red, blue, yellow and the three hues combined. Unique edition of 250 numbered copies on strong vellum. Spotting on the endpapers, slight rubbing to the spines.
