The Malleus Maleficarum is a treatise on demonology by the Dominicans and inquisitors Henri INSTITORIS (Heinrich KRAMER) and Jacques SPRENGER, published in Latin in Strasbourg in 1486 or 1487. At least 34 reprints of the book are recorded between 1487 and 1669, the main period of the witch-hunt. INSTITORIS was a controversial but eminent figure in the period several decades before the virulent witch-hunts of the 16th and 17th centuries; he himself failed in this endeavour and was eventually disowned in his diocese. The Malleus was his way of recovering from this defeat. In it, he portrayed the growing threat of witchcraft to Christianity and positioned himself and other clerics as shields against Satan's schemes. SPRINGER's name appears belatedly as co-author, more to legitimise the book's content than as author.
