Description
Bonnefon, Jean de – Original manuscript of ‘La dernière charrette’ signed by Jean de Bonnefon (letter) – Original manuscript signed by Jean de Bonnefon, in A5 oblong format, comprising 9 pages. Manuscript relating to the ill-fated Abbé Le Pailleur, founder in 1840 of the Congregation of the ‘Petites Sœurs’ in Saint Servan, in the Diocese of Rennes. This is a true story told from Jean de Bonnefon’s perspective, largely to the credit of Abbé Le Pailleur. It is an incredible text, given that the author described himself as an anti-clerical Catholic and played a decisive role in drafting the law on the separation of Church and State (according to Wikipedia). It was at his home, on 17 April 1905, that the compromise on the famous Article 4 was reached between Aristide Briand, the bill’s rapporteur, and Monsignor Fuzet. Joseph François Marie Bonnefon, known as Jean de Bonnefon (1866–1928), was a journalist and writer who described himself as an anti-clerical Catholic.
