La Châtelaine de Vergy is a short anonymous novel of 948 octosyllabic verses dating from the middle of the 13th century. The story is characterised by 1 tragic sequence, 1 succession of dilemmas touching on different medieval values: loyalty to the suzerain, to the woman loved, fin'amor, in the context of 1 decline in "courtly ideology" and the "devaluation" of both love and marriage in the society of the time. The original story was a great success, and has been retold over the centuries by many European authors, including Marguerite de Navarre.
