Description
CALLOT (Jacques) – Images of All the Saints of the Year According to the Roman Martyrology – Paris; Israël Henriet, 1636 [after 1642] – 1 volume, small In-4° – Complete set of 124 plates drawn and engraved on copper by Jacques Callot (1592–1635), including 1 engraved title page (slightly creased), 1 frontispiece and 122 plates, each with 4 subjects, totalling 488 prints relating to the saints of the liturgical year (nos. 1 to 476) and then to movable feasts (nos. 477 to 488) - Contemporary marbled tan sheepskin binding (front cover detached, corners worn, small losses to the covers, second joint split) - Smooth spine with significant losses, cap ends worn down) - Brown morocco title label - Red edges - This is one of the last works by Callot, who died one year before its first publication as a collection. Engraved in Lorraine at various times, the copper plates were sold by his heirs to Israël Henriet, who published a first Parisian print run in 1636, dedicated to Cardinal Richelieu (whose coat of arms on the title page was engraved by Abraham Bosse, after Lieure) - A fine copy of the second printing, with the engravings for January and February retouched, as well as those for the movable feasts. It does not include the typographical dedication to Cardinal Richelieu.
