The expedition, comprising eight ships at the outset, was launched at the start of the war against Spain with the aim of harassing the Spanish along the west coast of South America. Seven ships were lost off Cape Horn and along the coast of Chile; of the 900 men who set sail from England, more than 600 perished. The book contains descriptions of the island of Madeira, Brazil, Port Saint-Julien, Cape Horn, Juan Fernández Island, the capture of Paita, the arrival at Quibo, the coast of Mexico, Macao, etc.
