GROTIUS (Hugues) – The Law of War and Peace; New translation by Jean Barbeyrac. With the author’s own notes, which had not yet been published in French; & new notes by the translator – Amsterdam; Pierre de Coup, 1724 – 2 volumes, In-4° – A few scattered rare foxing spots, pages slightly yellowed, an ink stain on the side edge of Volume I without affecting the pages – Beautiful engraved frontispiece portrait - Contemporary ivory-coloured vellum overbound binding (insect damage to some of the endpapers and on the front cover of Volume II) - Smooth spines, titled and numbered in brown ink. The first edition of this work, regarded as the masterpiece of Hugues de Groot or Grotius (1583–1645), ‘a man of law, a man of faith, a man of letters’, was published (in Latin) in 1625. A fine copy of this reprint of the 1724 edition, reputed to be the best as it is accompanied by notes and commentaries by the author and by Barbeyrac, who was also the translator.
