Description
CHARLES BAUDELAIRE.
L.A.S., dated 1st February 1864.
Small folded in-4, 2 ff, fine handwriting legible in brown ink, ca 21 lines per page.
Supplementary letter addressed to Michel Levy, the first publisher in 1864 of Poe's Histoires grotesques et sérieuses translated by Baudelaire.
A sorrowful and begging letter: 3 years before his death, Baudelaire was still looking for money "... I am in a serious situation...".
Baudelaire mentions in fine the success of translations of Poe's short stories...
Michel Levy (1821-1875) was the founder of the Levy frères publishing house and later Calmann-Levy, publisher of Baudelaire and his translations of Poe.
Accompanied by a CDV from the "Présidence de la République", signed, the author unidentified, in modern pen, dated "28 June" (ca 1980) and referring to the said letter from Charles Baudelaire.
