Description
MANUSCRIT OF MEDICINE by the famous GUILLOTIN, father of the guillotine.... Joseph-Ignace GUILLOTIN. (probably in Reims), 1764. Fort small in-4. (3)-130 ff. numbered by hand and (210) ff. of which a part in fine left blank. Contemporary light fawn and muted basane (binding rubbed, some spotting and rubbing but intact, various stains notably on the first leaves, some foxing). Medical manuscript by Joseph-Ignace Guillotin, with his handwritten ex libris dated 1764 at the head of the work. A composite work bound later, it is made up of several medical manuscripts, copies in Latin or medical essays. In fact, there are several hands. It seems fairly consistent that a sort of mutual aid system enabled impecunious students to access the contents of the works. Indeed, Guillotin completed his medical studies with the help of scholarships. This manuscript is mainly composed of writings on women's diseases. The last pages of the manuscript contain various recipes and remedies. In 1763, Guillotin chose to study medicine, first in Reims, where studies were less expensive, and then in 1768 in Paris, thanks to scholarships. A doctor and revolutionary, he was one of the drafters of the cahier de doléances of Paris and a deputy to the National Constituent Assembly, remaining the famous and unfortunate inventor of the "guillotine", whereas as a doctor and politician Joseph-Ignace was to be the most famous. A youthful medical manuscript, voluminous, personal, intellectually coherent and bearing a direct mark of belonging, this work is a small historical testimony. There are very few preserved archives or manuscripts of Guillotin, and no real large manuscript collection comparable to those of other revolutionary figures. Generally speaking, there are only a few items relating to his activity as a deputy of the States General and small collections, without any particular density or subject matter, can be found in public collections (in France or in New York and Philadelphia). CAPITAL PUNISHMENT. DEATH SENTENCE.
