Description
19th century CALLIGRAPHY and GRAPHY.
Lot of 2 manuscripts.
-CALLIGRAPHY PRIZE. Writing competition notebook made by Maria Sautet student of the Saint Louis class Year 1800.
In-folio. Disbound. Brown ink. Poems or ornaments, each framed framed with a double geometric motif with interlacing spandrels.
-SCIPION, Martin-Victor. Méthode de tachygraphie. In-8. Unpaginated. Contemporary romantic brown basane, with "Martin Victor" supra-libris in gilt, smooth ornate spine, gilt framing on boards (binding rubbed in places, some brown spotting and traces of use).
Manuscript in brown ink, in methodological, thematic and exercise chapters, punctuated by parts elegantly written in ornate cursive.
A "treatise" on tachography (a form of shorthand attested as early as the Ancien Régime), based on an alphabet of signs and abbreviations, applied here to a variety of subjects. Inspired by ancient systems, it enjoyed a revival in the 19th century as a result of new teaching methods and a taste for ancient languages and esotericism. Manuscript by Martin-Victor Scipion, "pupil of Mme Charles Marnier, daughter of the author, Mr Coulon de Thévenot, 1845".
