Description
F.-R. de. CHATEAUBRIAND.
L.A., signed with his initials.
Paris, 25 February 1831. 3 pp. in-4 format (15.5 x 20 cm).
Interesting handwritten letter, both personal and political.
"I was unable to reply immediately to your letter. I was embarrassed by the final proofs of my work, which is nearing completion and the printing of which has so far prevented me from seeking rest in the mountains of (Switzerland) - I would be better off with you; (...) The sale of our rags will keep us in Paris until May. If by any chance you should still come, Sir, I should like to bid you a final farewell. Zélie and all her family are here; I haven't seen her yet because I don't leave my rue d'Enfer. I won't talk to you about politics; that goes its own way. Be happy, my dear Sir, in the midst of your woods; think of me a few times and receive my old and tender regards from your charming daughter [...]".
Disillusioned with the future of the Monarchy, Chateaubriand retired from business. After the Revolution of 1830, he left the Chamber of Peers. The year 1831 saw the publication of his works De la Restauration et de la Monarchie élective and Etudes Historiques (4 vol. in-8), the first of which is presumably mentioned in his letter.
