Bearing the indication "Monsieur le Professeur Orfila me fait ce dessin et cette démonstration pendant mon premier examen de médecine, à Paris, en janvier 1840", this note was written in Geneva on 19 February 1848. Mateo José Buenaventura Orfila y Rotger, known as Mathieu Orfila (1783-1853), naturalised French physician and chemist. Founder of forensic toxicology. Chemistry demonstration illustrated with a drawing. Orfila states "Acid lime phosphate (assein cat ) is introduced into flask xx. The arsenic acid is decomposed by hydrogen gas, which forms water and hydrogen arsenic gas; this gas emerges from the end z of the tube at y. It is ignited and immediately produces water and metallic arsenic, which is deposited on the porcelain plate A. B. It is in the form of very thin shiny brown spots with all the characteristics of arsenic".
