Charles-Emmanuel I signs this letter referring to an epidemic of "febre maligna" and announcing the death of his son Philippe-Emmanuel (1585-1605). He was Duke of Savoy and Prince of Piedmont from 1580 to 1630, and was also a descendant of François I through his mother, Marguerite de France, the last daughter of the King of France.
