Description
ADAM, Victor. [L'Amateur de chevaux: Nouvelle collection composée et lithographiée]. [Paris, H. Gache, 1857]. Oblong folio (31 x 46.5 cm) of 24 plates mounted on tabs. Contemporary red half-maroquin with corners, spine with false nerves underlined by gilt dotted lines, gilt title on spine, boards underlined by gilt fillets (binding a little rubbed, a few light brown spots). Suite of 24 plates of horses drawn from life by Victor Adam, and lithographed in black. One of the rarest suites. Absent from Mennessier de la Lance. Plate 15 is superbly coloured and enhanced with gum arabic at the time. Includes French breeds (Normand, Limousin, Breton, Tarbes, Auvergne, Francomtois), English breeds (Thoroughbred, Anglo-Norman, Irish), Mediterranean breeds (Spanish, Arabian, Andalusian, Moroccan), Central and Eastern European breeds (Hanoverian, Austrian, Ukrainian, Meklenburger, Siberian), as well as cross-breeds (Arabian-English). Victor Adam (1801-1866), a painter and later lithographer, stood out for his imagination and technical mastery. After a successful Salon run, he turned to lithography in 1824, producing the fine equestrian scenes and horse figures for which he is still famous today, in a style reminiscent of the expressive style of his contemporary Chassériau.
