ALBUM AMICORUM. CENTRAL EUROPE early 19th century.
[Pretty old box in green Russian leather with notebook].
In-12 format (10.5 x 17 x 2 cm), decorated in the imitation of an early 19th century book. Green Russian leather, smooth spine decorated with gilt roulettes, chain links and floral symbol on a latticework background, boards decorated with a gilt floral garland framed with a geometric motif in the centre such as a gilt chain surrounding a lozenge with stars in the spandrels. Gilt title on spine: "Gevidmet der Freundsch[aft]" (Dedicated to friendship).
Charming intimate object from the period.
A notebook of loose blank pages, with gilt edges, and a sheet of strong paper embroidered with a pretty floral composition - the work of a lady or young woman - starting from a heart, a symbol of piety or attachment (minor foxing). On the back cover, covered with a speckled vat paper, is a vignette engraved in tondo, coloured, "Paul et Virginie".
