Description
ALBUM OF INK DRAWINGS.
MEDIEVALISM. GOTHIC REVIVAL.
"1st Cahier de costumes françois."
S.l.n.n. (second half of the 19th century).
In-4, handwritten title page, 46 black ink or sepia drawings on paper, mounted on azure laid leaves. Contemporary fawn half-basane, glued paper boards (spine absent, wear, a few stains and scattered pitting).
A handsome and interesting album of figures, inspired by medieval characters and costumes from the 12th-16th centuries, based on ancient documents and/or later representations.
Most of the figures bear a handwritten title in ink at the top of the page: names of monarchs or nobles, each with the date of the figure inscribed at the foot.
In different hands and copied from series or motifs of different periods or origins, these drawings reproduce medieval figures in the costumes and attitudes of the time, in particular numerous historical figures, monarchs or knights (in armour or dress).
Quite finely drawn in pen with ink wash.
