Description
ANSON, Georges, Lord. A Voyage round the world in the years MDCCXL... London, John and Paul Knapton, 1749. Fort in-4. Contemporary fawn basane, spine ribbed and decorated (binding very rubbed but inside still fresh). Edition published one year after the original of this important 18th century English circumnavigation of Brazil and Patagonia, with important information on Argentina, Peru, Mexico and China. Organised by the British Government against the Spanish in America, Admiral Anson's expedition set out from St Helena, sailed to Madeira and then crossed the Atlantic to Brazil... After rounding the southern continent, the ships sailed to the Mariana Islands, Canton and then returned via Cape Town. Despite many losses, the voyage proved to be extremely important from a scientific point of view, thanks to the wealth of nautical and natural observations made, in particular the value of citrus fruits in the fight against scurvy. Illustrated with beautiful fold-out black etched maps and views. Chadenat, 4170 (for the French edition).
