Contemporary lightly marbled fawn calf, smooth spine decorated, red edges. The genesis of art criticism in eighteenth-century France. Guillaume Baillet de Saint- Julien (1726-1795), author of several "salons" and of the first French poem on painting, was a critic and collector, a lover of drawing, engraving and French galant painting. A friend of Saint-Aubin, he built up a library specialising in painting.
