Description
[BENSERADE, Isaac de].
Metamorphoses d'Ovide en Rondeaux.
A Paris, de l'Imprimerie Royale, 1676.
In-4, (7) ff, 463 pp, (4) ff, figures. 19th century speckled tawny calf, spine ribbed and decorated, tawny title and date-pieces, compartments decorated with petit fers and gilt fillets, triple gilt fillet framing the covers with angular fleurons, gilt roulette on the edges, red edges (nerves, edges and corners rubbed, very slightly split jaw).
First edition of Isaac de Benserade's poems based on Ovid's Metamorphoses in French rondeaux.
A very fine edition illustrated with a frontispiece engraved by Sébastien Leclerc after a design by Charles Le Brun and numerous copper-engraved vignettes in the text in black by Chauveau, Leclerc and Le Pautre.
Dedicated to the dauphin, Louis de France, it was very expensive for its time and is thought to have been the result of the Sun King's temporary passion for Madame de Ludre, canoness of Poussay, a friend of the author (there are 1 dedicated rondeaux and evocative acrostics in the text).
An unsigned drawing of the engraving on page 18, pasted opposite the frontispiece.
Provenance: Emmanuel Martin.
