Contemporary half olive calf with small corners, smooth spine romantically decorated with gilt or blind roulettes and fillets, gilt title, spotted edges (wear to spines and minor rubbing, spines a little faded and rubbed, minor foxing, 5 plates lacking). Rare first edition of this fascinating travel account, considered to be the most important on Africa in the 19th century. René Caillié (1799-1838) was the first European explorer to return alive from Timbuktu, then off-limits to Christians, after crossing the Sahara from Niger to Morocco.
