Description
[CHILLIAT, Michel]. Les Souffleurs, comedy. Paris, Vve de Ch. Coignard, C. Cellier, 1694. In-12, (3)-143 pp. and 1 pp. errata, fine margins. Nineteenth century brown morocco, spine ribbed and decorated with gilt, triple gilt fillet framing the covers, inner gilt garland, gilt edges (spine and binding rubbed). First edition in delicate morocco by Brany, a Parisian bookbinder of the last third of the 19th century. Only one entry in the CCFr. A fine copy of the text, almost as published. Comedy currently attributed to Michel Chilliat (the BnF has doubts), a bookseller-printer in Lyon and then in Paris (until ca 1697-1698) using some of the main characters of the Commedia dell'arte, Harlequin, Mezzetin, Pierrot, Colombine... to mock the alchemists then known as the souffleurs. Copy with the last leaf in second state, i.e. including the name and address of Nicolas Leclerc as seller of the tunes for this comedy. Briffaud, Répertoire du théâtre français imprimé au XVIIe siècle, 9430.
