In-12, (1)-144 pp. and (1)-96 pp. Contemporary red morocco, spine ribbed with fleur-de-lysé, gilt title, gilt roulette and fillet on boards with fleurons in spandrels, red edges (corners dulled, head cap frayed, seems to be missing a blank ff. at head).
First part of an apology of the Society of Jesus, which will be completed in November of the same year, concerning the doctrine itself.
Complete with the 2 parts.
Joseph de Menoux (1695-1766), a native of Besançon, made his career as a preacher to King Stanislas. The collaboration of Father Henri Griffet (1698-1771), who is sometimes mentioned, is not proven for the first part.

Provenance: fine ex libris in etching with the arms of Longueil (Normandy), with the motto "Pacis et belli reliquum" on the 1st endpaper. Antique crowned red ink wetstamp left blank on title.
