Of Jewish origin, albeit Catholic, the Fourierist lawyer Jan Kazimierz Czynski, known as Jean Czynski (1801-1867), made an early attempt to draw attention to the fate of the Jews on the borders of the "Old Kingdom". By not separating this cause from that of the rest of the Polish nation, which was subject to Russia or Prussia, he was an exception among the leading figures of Polish nationalism. Exiled to Paris, then Brussels and London, he was one of the most active activists in these two causes and was close to the Polish historian Joachim Lelewel. Together with Zoé de Valmond, he founded the review Le Nouveau Monde, the organ of the dissidents of the Harmonian Union.
