Description
HENRION, Denis. DESHAYES.
The Use of the Compass of Proportion.
A Paris, Chez l'Autheur (sic), Chez de la Caille, 1681.
In-12. Contemporary havana basane, spine ribbed and decorated, gilt title (slight lateral wetness on a few quires, a few creases not serious to the plate, binding a little rubbed).
A good copy in its contemporary binding.
Complete with the folding etching representing the compass of proportion in 2 figures. Several woodcut figures in text.
Denis (sometimes Didier) Henrion, a 16th-century mathematician (d. ca. 1632) known for his translations of Euclid and for having published one of France's first treatises on logarithms (Paris, 1626), devised this compass, which was made by the inventor Daniel Chorez.
This work, originally published in 1618, introduced the tool to France.
