Description
engraved suite from the 16th century.
ESTAÇO, Aquiles or Achille STATIUS. LAFRERI or LAFRERY.
Inlustrium viror vt extant in vrbe expressi vultus.
Romae, formis A. Lafreri, 1569.
Small folio, engraved title, LII plates. Contemporary ivory vellum, smooth spine, speckled edges (spotting and soiling on the binding and the inner spine of the work on a few quires, upper hinge split, the 3 preliminary leaves missing).
A very fine suite engraved entirely in etching.
The Portuguese humanist Aquiles Estaço (Achille Stazio) (1524-1581), secretary to Pope Pius V and to the Council of Trent, was responsible for one of the first collections devoted to ancient iconography.
Complete with 52 plates of marble bust portraits of Greeks and Romans, depicted against a neutral shaded background, with text and autographed names of each bust engraved in the plate, numbered in Roman numerals in the lower right-hand corner.
Although unsigned, the work is sometimes attributed to the engraver Agostino Musi, known as Agostino Veneziano or Veneto (ca 1490- after 1536).
Beautiful engraved title-frontispiece with portico.
The preface is by Aquiles Estaço but here only the atlas is bound, without the text.
Only 2 entries in the CCFr (BnF and Nice)
Cicognara, 2120.
