An early edition of the life of the Portuguese nobleman and Viceroy of the Portuguese Indies, Dom João de Castro (1500-1548), written by the priest-historian Jacinto Freire de Andrade (1597-1657).
Published in 1651, it is the very first biography in the Portuguese language.
De Castro fought against the Ottoman Empire at the siege of Tunis (1535), joined Estêvão de Gama (Vasco's son) on an expedition to Suez and played a major role in the defeat of the Gujarat sultanate at the siege of Diu in 1546. He was appointed viceroy by John III of Portugal and was confessed at his death by St Francis Xavier, then nuncio to India.
Also includes accounts of the battles between the Arabs and Turks at Hormuz.
