Basane marbled with period decoration, spine with 7 bands, title and tomaison gilt, decorated boxes with iron and gilt fillet, triple framing of roulette and gilt fillet on the boards, ornamental plate struck in the centre, gilt roulette on the edges, speckled edges (spines rubbed with small cracks or sometimes split, tarnished headpieces, restoration on the cut of volume 3, slight general oxidation, marginal wetness). Large margins. Printed in fraktur. Universal chronicle attributed to Johann Ludwig Gottfried, offering a panorama of world history from Creation to the year 1576. The work follows the traditional division of history according to the four great monarchies and presents events in chronological order. Translated from the third, enlarged printing, with an account of the history of the Reformation in Germany and a detailed index. These richly illustrated Chronicles are among the great historical compilations circulated in 17thᵉ century Europe. They refer to the discovery of the New World and the discoveries of Christopher Columbus, Pizarro and Magellan. With the only known representation of the riot that took place in Mexico City in 1624, during which the viceroy was overthrown. Illustrated with a double-hemisphere world map, Nova delineatio totius orbis terrarum per Petrus vander Aa, the large burin-engraved portrait of Simon de Vries in volume III, 28 full-page black engravings with miniature medallion portraits of historical figures and around one hundred large black etching figures in the text. The first volume also includes an engraved title page and dedication. Volume I.
