2 parts in one small volume in folio, (33 x 22 cm), (6) ff (including 2 engraved titles), 134 pp; (4) ff, pp. 135-368, (6) ff, 1 folding table (2 unpaginated pages between pp. 137 and 138), 30 figures. Contemporary ivory vellum painted in ochre and orange, spine smooth (slight rubbing, title page restored and partly unbound, missing pp. 63 and 64, light spotting, marginal defects including tear without missing p. 114 and minor worm work from page 278 to end).
Very rare first edition.
Jacques Guillemeau (1550-1613), French surgeon and obstetrician, was a pupil of Riolan, Courtin and above all Ambroise Paré, who chose him as his successor. On Paré's death, he became private physician to Charles IX, Henri III and then Henri IV.
Only one entry in the CCFr (Poitiers).
Illustrated with two engraved title pages and 30 full-page in-text figures, including 19 dedicated to the anatomy of the human body and 11 to surgical instruments.
Followed by Traité des maladies de l'œil, considered to be the first ophthalmological text published in French.
