Suivant la copie imprimée à Paris & se vendent À Anvers, chez Henry van Dunewalt, Marchand Libraire au Marché aux oeufs, aux 3 Moines, 1688. 4 parts in one small volume in-12, (19) ff. including frontispiece, (1) title f., preface and La vie d'Esope, 123-(3) pp. ; (1) title f., pp.141-268-(2) pp. ; (1) title f., 117-[3] pp. ; (1) title f., pp. 119-233-(3) pp. numerous mid-page engraved figures, parts of table ff. 19th century olive morocco Basane, smooth spine, gilt title and gilt fillets, gilt edges, guilloche edges (spine a little faded, small lack at the head of the lower jaw, slight rubbing, margins very slightly short at the frontispiece as we sometimes see on works of this period the engraving being generally larger, small tear at the head of the frontispiece and without lack pp. 99-102 and 233-234, a few scattered freckles). A good copy of an uncommon and sought-after edition. First foreign publication of the illustrated Fables. The illustration includes a frontispiece title-page by Romeyn de Hooghe - here without the engraved inscription on the column, thus conforming to the 1688 edition - and numerous mid-page vignettes etched in black by H(enrik) Causse. The vignettes are imitated from those of Fr. Chauveau, usually signed in full, sometimes only with the initials H. C. Provenances: Ex dono MS ancien (Victoire) Béthy Lyon, 29 March 1850. Ex libris MS 26 February 1870 Eugène Laurent, Vichy (on a flyleaf). Ex libris MS old sepia ink, Ex dono MS "Au docteur Rénier", dated Laval, 12 february 1938 (opposite the frontispiece).
