Description
[HEART OF PHILOSOPHY]. Paris, Philippe Lenoir, (1533). In-4 small square in-8, (6) ff -CXXVI ff. Well executed pastiche soft vellum with laces (slight general oxidation of the paper, a few scattered stains, a few stains on the cover). (slight general oxidation of the paper, a few scattered stains, a few rare and small old handwritten marks or annotations of the time, discreet angular restoration to the first 2 ff, seems to be missing fI and fIIII). Rare richly illustrated Gothic edition, dated 1533 by the BnF (Moreau). A kind of popular encyclopaedia, both an almanac and a medical or esoteric manual, indicated as "new" in the colophon because it is based on a 1504 edition of the dialogue between Placides and Timeo, attributed to Jean Bonnet. Considered one of the first "philosophical" texts in Old French. Here enlarged with an "Espe-re du Monde" section from Johannes de Sacro Bosco's De Sphera Mundi and a translation of Arianus' Computus manualis (Moreau/Renouard IV, 638). Only one copy in the CCFr (Lille). Title page printed in red and black with a large woodcut with figures of Aristotle/Philosophy and a large sieve lettering; a large woodcut figure supposed to represent Philip the Fair at his court with the address of Lenoir, à l'enseigne de la Roze blanche courônee, printed in red and black, on the verso of the last ff of the table. Numerous handsome woodcuts in various formats, most of which concern astronomy or palmistry: movements of the planets, eclipses, zodiac figures, hands illustrated with mnemonic devices for remembering the particulars of the calendar. Numerous sieve lettering, sometimes with figures. Bechtel, C-408.
