A Lyon, par Guill[aume] [Rouill[epar], 1579. 2 volumes in-folio, (68) ff., 386 pp. fig. and pp. 387-852 pp., (14) ff. Later marbled fawn basane, smooth spine, title, iron tomaisons and gilt fillets, cold roulette framing the boards, spotted edges (bindings rubbed, headpieces of vol.2 worn, jaws of vol. 2 slightly cracked, title margin reinforced, spotting). Early French edition of the great sixteenth-century treatise on medicinal botany by Pietro Andrea Gregorio Mattioli (1501-1577), translated from the Italian original first published in 1544. The French original appeared in 1572. The illustration consists of numerous woodcut botanical figures in black, some of which were enhanced with colour at the time. An immense compendium of botanical and medical knowledge in the mid-sixteenth century, this work was widely used by physicians and botanists throughout the centuries, but is incomplete and/or in poor condition.
