Description
MESSIE, Pierre, DU VERDIER, Antoine. Les Diverses leçons de Pierre Messie gentil-homme de Sevile... augmentées outre les précédentes impressions de la suite d'icelles, faite par Antoine Verdier, Sieur de Vauprivaz, &c. Lyon, Barthelemy Honorat, 1580. 2 parts in a large in-8 volume in-12 format (180 x 115mm), 661-(10 pp. ; (20)-422-(18 (out of 20)) pp. contemporary coverstitched vellum, smooth spine, handwritten title on lower board. silk bookmarks at head (vellum tarnished and a little shrunken, hinges split, title page faded, some old annotations in ink, small lack at upper corner p. 419 of 2nd work; missing last f. of 2nd part). Very rare Lyon edition, followed for the first time by the lessons of Antoine du Verdier. A humanist, philosopher and historian of the Spanish Renaissance, Pedro Mexia (in French Pierre Messie, 1496-1551) owes his reputation to his work Silva de varia lección, dedicated to Charles V and published in Seville in 1540. In this collection, the author discusses major events in world history, the powers of nature and man, great human achievements, banquets, gastronomy, wine, etc., based on books by Greek and Latin authors that he had read in their original language. In 1552, his translation into French by Claude Gruget was published by Etienne Groulleau in Paris. Like the Castilian editions, the French edition was a great success (37 successive editions between 1552 and 1654). Mexia's work was followed by the second edition of Diverses leçons d'Antoine du Verdier..., the first in 1577, decorated with a portrait of the author in contemporary colours.
