Description
Father Philibert MONET. Origine et pratique des armoiries à la gauloise qui est... A Lyon, Chez Claude Landry, 1631. In-4, (8) ff. 187 pp. Contemporary vellum, MS title on spine (some foxing). Only edition of one of the first treatises on French heraldry. Dedicated to the Prince de Condé. The book by Jesuit Father Philibert Monet (1566-1643), founder of the College of Thonon, is both a historical work (origin of coats of arms) and a technical work (how to read them). Recognition of coats of arms as a social necessity: the importance of being seen and recognised. Decorated with a number of handsome initials and broad bands. A fine copy in its contemporary binding. Nice engraved ex libris of Dr Eugène Olivier.
