Description
[MONTESQUIEU]. Lettres persanes. New edition, revised, corrected & considerably enlarged by the Author. A Amsterdam et à Leipsick, chez Arkstée & Merkus, 1758-1760. 2 parts in one volume in-12, (1)-221pp. 1 bl. f. and (2)-235 pp. (including the table). Contemporary marbled and lightly pebbled havana calf, ribbed spine, tawny title-piece, compartments decorated with fleurons and gilt fillet, crowned arms stamped at the tail of the spine, red edges (corners dulled, side edges worn, some spotting, head cap frayed). First posthumous edition, partly original. Copy of the "D" edition, published by Montesquieu's son, Jean-Baptiste de Secondat, with 161 letters to which he added a short essay written by his father, Quelques réflexions sur les lettres persanes (pp. 3-6). The crowned iron stamped at the tail of the spine may be Bouthier de Rochefort (Maconnais) even if the crescent seems to be poured, perhaps Jean-Baptiste Bouthier de Rochefort (1736-1814), member of the Parliament of Dijon, from whom we know ex libris to books and on the same period. USBEK & RICA. EPISTOLARY NOVEL.
