Description
NECKER. De l'Administration des finances de la France. (Paris), 1784. 3 volumes in-8, IV-CLIX-345 pp. with folding table; III-536 pp. and (1) f., IV-468 pp. Contemporary mottled tan basane, smooth spine decorated with gilt fleurons and fillets, red and green title-pieces and tomaisons, gilt fillet on the edges, red edges (spines a little faded, small wormholes on the spines and boards, some minor rubbing). First edition of this major work on the history of the late Ancien Régime. A good copy. Jacques Necker, Minister of Finance under Louis XVI, is considered to be the only person to have presented a realistic state of the kingdom's finances before the Revolution. Necker was one of the main advocates of neo-mercantilism, in opposition to the physiocratic theories prevalent at the time. Initially a banker, he was Finance Minister on three occasions between 1777 and 1790.
