A Ratopolis (Paris), 1737. 4 works in 1 volume large in-12, (1)-204-(16) pp. 9 pl. ; (3) ff. with frontispiece, XVI-140-(13) pp.; (12) ff. 196-(4) pp. ; (1)-33 pp. Contemporary spotted calf, spine decorated (binding slightly rubbed, some ff. browned). Rare original of the first book devoted exclusively to cats. Illustrated with 9 copper engravings in black, including two fold-outs, by Coypel. A vignette representing the god Pet. Usually accompanies the Histoire des Rats, written in response to the Histoire des chats. First edition of this encyclopaedic and entertaining history using rats as a metaphor for Man. Following the debates on the human cogito and Descartes' animal machine, several authors took up the defence of animals, seeking to describe their language or intelligence.
