Colbert. Avignon, 1759. In-12. (3)-204 pp. Contemporary marbled fawn half-basane, smooth spine decorated with gilt fleurons and gilt title (covers a little rubbed, upper jaw a little split over 1 cm but a fresh copy). Sought-after posthumous first edition. Published after the manuscripts and notes of the famous author of the Contes by the architect Pierre Patte (1723-1814). Only 2 entries in the CCFr (BnF). Important memoirs, devoted to Perrault's public career, in particular his role with Colbert in the royal building projects, from the Louvre to Versailles, and his sometimes conflictual relations with the Académie or artistic circles. More than just a writer, the book reveals a man of influence committed to asserting French taste in architecture and the arts, and is a first-rate historical account of the Grand Siècle. A good copy in its contemporary binding. Provenance: Ex-libris engraved with the arms of Bernard-Louis de Chauvelin and Agnès de Mazade. The Chevalier de Chauvelin (1716-1773), marquis, military, made the Italian Campaign (1733/35), then the army Germany; colonel in 1743, he serves in Italy under the Prince de Conti, Commander of Corsica in 1749 and ambassador in Turin in 1753.
