PLACARDS. BELGIUM. NETHERLANDS. FLEMISH. [Collection of pieces dedicated to the Bishop of Ghent, Govaart Geeraard van Eersel]. Antwerp and Ghent, 1772. Bound in-folio folder (37 x 22 cm) and in-4 or small in-folio leaves including 20 fold-outs. Contemporary fawn half-bassane, spine ribbed, red title page, decorated boards (slight rubbing, spine ends and hinges cracked, some pages uniformly browned, small tears not serious). Collection of rarities. 29 dedicatory pieces, fascicles or placards, addressed to the Catholic priest of the Southern Netherlands Govaart Geeraard van Eersel (1713-1778), all published and/or printed in the year of his episcopal appointment to celebrate, pay homage or announce. In French, Latin, sometimes Macaronic or Dutch. On 22 November 1771, Maria Theresa of Austria appointed him Bishop of Ghent, and on 30 March 1772, his appointment was confirmed by Pope Clement XIV. On 9 August 1772, he was consecrated by Cardinal Joannes Henricus van Frankenberg, Archbishop of Mechelen. His motto was "Ordinate et provide" (With order and perspective).
