RABELAIS, François. OEuvres de maître François Rabelais. Amsterdam, Henri Bordesius, 1711. 6 volumes in 5 volumes small in-12. Titles in red and black. Slightly later speckled fawn calf, spine ribbed and decorated in the fanfare style with alternating stippled motifs and gilt roulettes, red and black morocco title and appendix, triple gilt fillet framing the covers, (Skilful and discreet restorations including a head cap, some foxing, in volume 3 slight paper loss in the upper margin with small damage to the text on pages 201-208, discreet stains and scratches). First critical and annotated edition of Rabelais. Drawn up by the philologists Jacques Le Duchat and Bernard de La Monnoye, whose remarks were to become a landmark. A good copy, beautifully bound. With a smiling Silenus face in gilt fleuron repeated on the spines. Only 3 entries in the CCFr (BnF and Nice). Illustrated with a frontispiece, a portrait of Rabelais, three folding plates showing La Devinière (Rabelais' house), a folding map of Chinon and a vignette bearing the arms of the dedicatee, Raby Wentworth, peer of England.
