Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban (1633-1707), military engineer and marshal of France, was commissioner-general of fortifications (1678) and then lieutenant-general of the kingdom (1688), a title to which was attached the dignity of marquis. His designs left a lasting mark on the engineering and history of strongholds beyond their borders. Provenances: handwritten ex libris on the title page with a signature to the title and pp.1.
